More Equipment Testing
« on: April 11, 2011, 07:12:34 PM »

Ikea Solar Table Lamp - I responded to a posting for an Ikea solar lamp (link below) on Freecycle.  I told the guy offering it I may be able to fix it for him as I thought the problem may be a battery problem.  When I showed up, he gave it to me.  He had purchased it in Pittsburgh (over a hundred mile roundtrip) last week and did not feel it was worth the effort to return it or even buy new batteries.  I took it home and, sure enough, the problem was one of the new batteries which for some reason would not play nice with the other batteries when connected properly.  I replaced the batteries and was good to go.  I am highly impressed by this $20 lamp.  The LED light is high in intensity and the wavelength of the LEDs mimmick the spectrum of a traditional incandescent light bulb as much as it is possible for LEDs to do so.  The solar cell power module is tres cool in that it pops out of the base so you can take it over to the window and charge it, then place it back into the square hole from which it came.  Really great idea for a portable power pack.  If you have the opportunity to get one, do so.  Here's the link:

Funny you should write about this today. Just last night we lost power and I am getting out some of our stuff when Pat says, "Why dont we save the batteries and use the solar lights until they go dark". Solar lights, says I? "What solar lights?" "The solar lights that line our driveway" says she...

Now why did not I think of that. Go out pull them up and they make great lil lanterns in the house.

:gclap2 Way to go, Pat! Clever thing.
IKEA also has solar driveway lights, a tall patio lamp, short table lamps with shades (not sure on those), a snake light (a string od LEDs in a white plastic tube and the solar collector does indeed look like a snake's head.) and 3 sizes of Chinese-Lantern style lights.
Today is payday...maybe I'll wander over before the supper crowd comes in.

Fire Piston - Got a cheap fire piston similar to the one at the link below just to see what they're all about.  It does work and is light.  BUT, the only thing I could get to start an ember was some homemade char cloth.  I tried dryer lint, cotton ball cotton, and little pieces of sawdust/wood shavings.  I'm waiting for an opportunity to try some bellybutton lint (only half-kidding).  Will let you know if something else works.  Here's the link.

Great to hear!! This is a project for all of us in the next few months.

And we started by making some char cloth about 2 weeks ago. We will make sure a piece is in all BOB's.

For some reason our teenagers often lose just one sock of a pair.  So we have lots of orphan socks waiting for alternate uses.  Char cloth has been added to the "other use" list.

I guess this is one way to "involve" your children in being prepared!
